The apartment was quiet and dark when I returned. I assumed Miles hadn’t come back here, that maybe he’d gone back with Raina to her place. But my best guess was that Caleb was here.

I took off my shoes and my mask and was desperate to get out of this ridiculous yellow dress too, but I was curious to know if he was still awake. If he’d been waiting for me. What was that kiss going to lead to?

I tiptoed down the hallway, right to the end where both our bedrooms were on opposite sides. I had my shoes dangling from my hand. I couldn’t hear any sound or movement coming from Caleb’s room. Was he even here? Had he gone somewhere else from the party?

I leaned towards his door in the dark, pressing my ear to it in a desperate attempt to listen in. I wasn’t sure what I would even do if he was in his room. It wasn’t like I’d see myself in.

“What are you doing?” Caleb’s voice boomed in my ear. I squealed, startled straight out of my own skin and whipped around to find him standing right there behind me, leaning towards me in the dark. I hadn’t even heard him step up behind me while I was trying to listen to the sounds in his room.

There was a note of accusation in his voice. I immediately felt defensive.

“I…I…wasn’t sure if you were in or not.”

I knew that answer made no sense.

He towered over me and I felt like I was folding into my own body as I cowered away from him. He didn’t take his eyes off me.

“And how may I help you, madam?” he continued, in that thickly sexy voice of his. He placed a strong hand on the side of my head on the door, like it was an attempt on his part to trap me. I gulped, my throat had gone dry. I seriously had no good answers for him at all.

I shook my head.

“I was just curious. I didn’t mean to invade on your privacy,” I muttered. Now that my eyes had adjusted to the darkness of the hallway, I could see the way his gaze was traveling all over my body. He was looking at me the way he’d looked at me that night in Maui. Like he wanted to devour me. Possess me.

I was already ready to give myself up to him. Did he know that too?

“You’re standing right outside my door, listening in, I’m sure there is something I can do for you tonight,” he said and his voice drawled, dragging itself all over my skin and my body. It was like he was touching me without raising even a finger to me.

I licked my lips. My cheeks were burning. Did he seriously want me to say the actual words?

I looked straight into his deep blue eyes.

“You know what I want, Caleb,” I said in a low hoarse whisper and he clenched his jaw.

“All you had to do was ask,” he replied.
